Who hasn’t experienced the awkwardness of letting out a fart at the worst possible time, either in the middle of a meeting or right in front of someone you have a crush on? You simply want to shrivel up and die. It smells bad, it sounds bad, and it’s almost impossible to conceal. But as embarrassing and annoying as flatulence can be, it’s also perfectly natural.

The causes are varied, but mainly depend on what you eat: beans, chickpeas, cauliflower and artichokes are just a few examples of fart-inducing foods. Other causes of flatulence can be lactose intolerance, some medications (such as laxatives) or even stress and anxiety. In fact, there are so many things that can cause gas to build up in the body that it’s impossible to list them all here.

But we have good news: there are home remedies that you can prepare yourself to help reduce your risk of farting, and they really do work. You probably already have everything you need in your kitchen cupboard.

1. Cinnamon

Cinnamon reduces the swelling of the stomach, thus preventing the formation of gas. It’s also very easy to ingest: you can simply add it to some milk and drink it. Here’s how…

Heat 8 oz. of milk in a saucepan until it boils. When it’s hot enough, add a teaspoon of cinnamon, stir and turn off the heat. Drink this mixture every night before going to bed. And if you prefer, you can add a little honey to the mixture to sweeten it.

2. Ginger

Ginger is truly a wonder when it comes to natural remedies: it can help prevent colds, it relieves pain and stress, and can be used to treat stomach and intestinal problems. And as if that wasn’t enough, it can also be used to prevent farting! Simply add it to your meals or take it as a drink. Here’s the recipe…

Heat 8 oz. of water with two teaspoons of ginger powder in a pan and bring it to a boil over low heat. Once it’s boiling, let it simmer for 10 minutes. Then remove it from the heat, allow it to settle for five minutes and filter the mixture. Drink this magic potion three times a day and you’ll be flatulence-free!

3. Aloe Vera

In addition to being a good treatment for burns, aloe vera gel can ease abdominal pain and reduce the amount of gas. You can consume the gel just as it is or mix it with hot water to make a tea.

4. Mustard Seeds

Usually we think of mustard as a condiment for hot dogs and hamburgers, but the seeds used to make it are actually a good cure for gas. Simply add them to your food or take two seeds in the morning with some water. Gradually increase the dose each day until you can take 12 seeds a day, but not all at once. Try taking four in the morning, two after lunch, six before bed and so forth.

5. Caraway Seeds

These seeds are the key to treating any problems involving indigestion and colic. Mix them up in a drink like this…

Heat 8 oz. of water and bring it to a boil. When boiling, remove it from the heat and add one teaspoon of seeds. Cover it and let it steep for about five minutes. Drink before going to bed.

Ideally you should drink three cups a day, but don’t push yourself!

6. Garlic

Garlic is also a food that is very beneficial to our health. It improves blood circulation, lowers cholesterol levels and acts as a natural antibiotic. But as if that weren’t enough, garlic stimulates the gastric acids and facilitates digestion, which helps prevent flatulence. You can consume it in any form, but this recipe with cumin is particularly good at preventing farts…

Peel three cloves of garlic and cut them in half. Put water, pepper, cumin and garlic in a saucepan and turn on the heat. Let it boil for five minutes and then remove it from the heat and let it stand for five minutes. Now filter it and drink it at room temperature three times a day.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is great as a salad dressing, but it can also be a used to prevent flatulence. To make it really effective, prepare it like this…

Mix 8 oz. of water with four teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a saucepan and heat it for a few minutes without bringing it to a boil. Remove the pan from the heat and allow it to cool to room temperature. Now it’s ready to drink!
